Seeker
It was just turning Spring in the Realm and Kardan found himself taking a
much needed repast at the Blue Boar Inn, several leagues South of the
cursed city of Bagrah. As usual, the bar of the inn was full of
adventurers talking and laughing and, above all, drinking. Kardan, alone
at a table in the corner, let his attention wander aimlessly amongst the
various conversations. Suddenly, a topic caught his attention. An ancient
looking man sat stooped over a tankard of ale speaking quietly of the fate
of a city called Touricar. According to this old hermit, the ruins located
just north of the inn were once a large city, bustling and active. It was
a major hub in its day, facilitating trade between the humans and the
gnomes to the south as well as serving as a clearinghouse for caravans
that had successfully navigated the Darfehl Dunes.
Kardan was intrigued. He had often wondered at the origin of the aged
ruins, as he frequently passed through them during his travels. No one
had ever been able to give him much information about the town, other
than the fact that is had been attacked one fateful night and sacked by
unknown invaders. Thus, as the hermit finished his tale and his audience
dispersed, Kardan arose from his seat and approached the old man to hear
more of this unknown place.
Thankful to have an audience for his ramblings, the old man answered all
of Kardan's questions. They spent the entire night and the early hours of
the following morning talking about the great city of Touricar. Finally,
exhausted by his lengthy tale, the old man bade Kardan farewell and
staggered out of the pub.
Kardan retired to his room for the evening, his head swimming with mental
images the old man's tale had conjured. Imagine, a great city that now one
knows about! Kardan undressed and laid upon his cot. However, sleep did
not come, as the myriad stories rolled through his mind over and over
again. As he lay there thinking, he heard a shuffling at his door.
Instantly on his guard, Kardan stood up and lit a nearby lantern. Quickly,
he ran to the door and pulled it open, but there was not a sole to be seen
in the hallway outside. As he began to close the door, he looked down and
noticed a small package wrapped in dirty rags. Intrigued but cautious,
Kardan carefully lifted the package and took it inside his room. He slowly
pulled the rags away to reveal a thin, tattered book. Opening the fragile
thing with all possible delicacy, he read the inscription inside,
"Expedition Journal of Thymiso Fermendon."
The journal described the region immediately surrounding the Blue Boar as
well as lands to the South and to the West. It also talked of something
greater than Kardan had ever expected. An expedition library. A great
library in the vanquished city of Touricar. This knowledge store was key
to explorers and tradesmen alike. People came to the library from afar and
their adventures and experiences were recorded so that others could
benefit from their travels. Some ardent supporters, like the owner of this
journal, kept meticulous records so that their stories might be more
complete for recording.
After finishing the journal, Kardan fell back on his cot, his head
swimming with possibilities. The information in this journal was valuable
indeed! Imagine if ten such journals existed...or a hundred! With so many
adventurers roaming about, it was almost conceivable, almost believable
that one day the entire realm, nay, the entire WORLD, might one day become
known, documented, sorted and tamed for the benefit of people everywhere.
Kardan spent a long night thinking about this possibility and making
plans. In the morning, he put his idea into action.
Kardan quickly traveled to his home in Kazaad where he composed letters
to several fellow adventurers that he trusted detailing his plan. It was
quite simple. He wanted to establish an organized group of adventurers
dedicated to exploration and discovery; to wisdom and research; to the
pursuit of truth. He would call his clan Seeker. His companions were
thrilled with the idea. With their support driving him forward, Kardan
dedicated most of his personal wealth to raise a new library amongst the
ancient ruins of long forgotten Touricar. He petitioned the Immortals
themselves and was granted permission to form an official Clan. At last,
Kardan and his fellow clansmen could begin rebuilding the great
Exploration Library; and its vast collection of knowledge.
